Small SUVs Do Not Fare Well in Crashes - 2013 IIHS Crash Test Reveals

Crash tests performed by various institutions and agencies are updated and tinkered with quite frequently to reflect the real life situations as closely as possible.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has updated its testing procedures and standards this year to include a tough new frontal-impact crash test designed to measure a vehicle's ability to protect occupants when the car, truck, SUV, or minivan strikes a tree, a pole, or an oncoming vehicle on the front left corner of the tested vehicle.

This time 13 vehicles from small SUV category were tested, and the results are pretty disappointing. Only two out of 13 performed well for front-end crash tests, one receiving 'Good' and the other getting 'Acceptable' rating. The rest are left with 'Marginal' and 'Poor' rating.  The vehicle with 'Good' rating was 2014 Subaru Forester, and 'Acceptable' rating went to 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander.

The rating was based on the institutions's new 'small-overlap' crash test which is more stringent than the U.S. government's full-width front crash test.  Recent study found that about 25 percent of real life collisions resulting in serious injuries involved similar type of frontal impact.

Our recent article on SUV's rollover risk also revealed that the smaller and narrower SUVs have a greater risk of rollover.  If vehicle's safety is your top priority, you should reconsider before buying of of those vehicles with 'Poor' rating.
