USAA's Announces 'Best Value' Cars of 2013

The United Services Automobile Association, the insurer of 9.4 million U.S. military members and their families, released 'Best Value' cars of 2013 in its third annual report.

The “best value” list credits vehicles of various types that rank well in affordability, safety and reliability. The second list features the top cars for teen drivers also based on safety and reliability, as well as reasonable insurance costs.

The ranking is based on USAA's proprietary rating system called USAA Preferred, scoring each contender to determine which cars best meet the selected criteria from a pool of almost 70 vehicles.  Vehicles named 'Best Value' represents the ones with highest scores in each category.

This year, USAA raised the bar with regard to safety by requiring each car earn a top safety pick rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety before being entered into the selection pool.
