Smart Bike Navigation System by Hammerhead, First of Its Kind

Hammerhead's latest gadget is the world's first smart navigation system specifically designed for bicycles. It can help you navigate streets and trails. Unlike a hammerhead shark, it does so by blinking a series of LED lights to indicate which direction you should turn.

Surprisingly, it is also world's first social bike navigation product as it can share your rides and routes with friends and followers.  It is compatible with some the leading bicycle routing software such as Strava and MapMyRide.  One features that may attract bicyclists who like to socialize - it will help you to meet up with your friends or other bicyclists on the road.
Of course, it's primary function is to provides you with turn by turn direction via blinking LED lights to minimize distractions typically associated with standard map based navigation systems.

The attachment unit features an LED light array that guides you with the help of a smartphone app, available for Android and iOS. The device communicates with your phone via Bluetooth Smart, and draws upon crowd-sourced navigation data.

The waterproof, shockproof device uses Bluetooth LE to connect and promises a long battery life: the device itself can run for over 20 hours before it will need a recharge (via USB), and Hammerhead says a smartphone can run for over five hours while working with the Hammerhead. It also has a built-in headlight and side lights to help keep you safe.

“We think there is a huge gap in the biking market, in which we can not only promote safer, more frequent bike riding, but also leverage existing smartphone hardware rather than duplicating it as is done by standalone GPS units,” says Hammerhead Founder and CEO Piet Morgan. “Hammerhead offers users a simple, safe and efficient means of navigating.” “We are bikers ourselves, and aim to bring the power of real-time social navigation to biking, all in an affordable and simple package.”

Hammerhead is a crowd-funded project right now on Dragon Innovation, with a pledge at the $70 level reserving a device for you. That’s the early bird price, when those are gone the price goes up to $75.
