Infiniti Plans a Flagship 4-Door Coupe to Rival Porsche Panamera

Infiniti may be working on a new flagship four-door coupe model  to serve as the brand’s flagship according to Nissan's executive vice president Andy Palmer.

The brand is intentionally trying to avoid head-to-head competition with the established European luxury brands, with future models having a high-tech and stylish emphasis, with models powered predominantly by hybrid powertrains.

The car's sweeping fastback roofline could take its styling inspiration from the Infiniti Essence concept penned by Nissan design chief Shiro Nakamura and first shown at the 2009 Geneva auto show.

Palmer specifically said, “We won’t do a [Mercedes] S-Class or that type of car” saying the brand has already done a car in that vein, but has had better success with other models. Although Infiniti is intentionally avoiding an S-Class type vehicle, the new flagship could very well have Mercedes underpinnings, with Nissan-Renault and Daimler announcing a partnership several years ago, with the two collaborating on such projects as an engine plant, and development of the next-generation Smart.

However, Palmer noted that the sleek flagship has not yet been official green-lighted, saying the brand will need to sell plenty of Q50 sedans and Q60 crossovers to get the new model approved.  Also on the drawing board to possibly follow the four-door coupe is a mid-engined, hybrid powered, two-seater modeled after the Emerg-E concept.
