Mercedes-Benz AMG Vision Gran Turismo - This Car Looks Animated!

Can you imaging yourself driving this thing in real life, not from your couch playing Microsoft or Sony's latest racing games?

Mercedes-Benz finally revealed the latest move by the creators of the Gran Turismo series: Making the dream cars inside the game a reality, beginning with this, the AMG Vision Gran Turismo, powered by a twin-turbo 577-hp V-8. These images aren't screen captures — they're photographs.

After teasing it, unveiling it and giving us some details and a handful of photos over the weekend, Mercedes-Benz finally debuted the real AMG Vision Gran Turismo Concept at the LA Auto Show.

The car was designed as a virtual supercar for Sony's Gran Turismo 6 racing simulation for Playstation 3 at the request of the game's creator, Kazunori Yamauchi, but we wouldn't be surprised to see some of the concept's design language employed on future Mercedes.

“This is the future of Mercedes-Benz design,” Gorden Wagener, vice president for design at Daimler, said as he introduced the car at the Los Angeles Auto Show, where press previews began on Wednesday, simultaneous with its unveiling at the Tokyo motor show. “This car, or elements of it, will make its way into production.”

“The design of this concept car reflects to extreme effect the perfect symbiosis between emotional, sensuous contours and intelligently presented high tech,” he said.

Mr. Wagener said the car’s futuristic shape was actually inspired by an old, storied Mercedes racecar: the 1952 300 SL, which won the Carrera Panamericana an endurance race in Mexico — that year.

For a model car with no engine, it's surprisingly functional. The motorized rear spoiler raises and lowers, the taillights work and the LED grille is fully functional (and reminds us a bit of the Pontiac Firebird's flashing grille in Knight Rider). But the Gullwing doors weren't opened, so we can't comment on their functionality or the interior. We can comment on the "driver," however, a dummy sitting in the driver's seat that resembles the character who drives Gran Turismo's virtual cars.

So will we see a car that looks anything remotely close to a design of the AMG Vision Gran Turismo on a production Mercedes? Sure we will.  Mercedes-benz is working hard on 2015 AMG GT which share some of the design elements from this concept.  It's definitely not as dramatic, but it's getting there.
