Southwest Airlines to Increase Pet Fare starting January 2014
The cost of traveling with your pet on Southwest Airlines is increasing by $20 starting in January.
The airline announced that the charge to bring your pet in a carrier onto a plane will be $95 each way starting Jan. 15, up from the current fare of $75.
The Southwest pet fee is still the lowest among the nation's largest airlines.
The airline allows up to six pets in the cabin per flight, and only in carriers that fit under the seat in front of the pet's owner.
Here are the one-way fees other airlines charge passengers to travel domestically with pets:
- Delta Airlines: $125
- United Airlines: $125
- American Airlines: $125
- US Airways: $125
- Alaska Airlines: $100
- JetBlue Airlines: $100
- Virgin America: $100
- Spirit Airlines: $100
