Apple's CarPlay to Cause More Distracted Driving

Drivers are already distracted enough with technology gadgets and smartphones to a level that is almost out of control.  It's hard to go by a day without hearing about a car crash caused by someone texting or talking on the phone while driving.

So what would a device like Apple's upcoming CarPlay would do to public safety?  It's great if this infortainment systems can keep the passenger happy on a long trip.  The reality is that most drivers in the states are traveling alone, and CarPlay is meant to be installed in the center stack as a mean to control some of the essential functions of the car in addition to providing entertainment for the front seat occupants including the driver.

"We're very, very concerned about it," said David Teater, senior director at the nonprofit National Safety Council. "The auto industry and the consumer electronics industry are really in an arms race to see how we can enable drivers to do stuff other than driving."

Of course, Apple is claiming that the device will increase safety by allowing the driver to keep their eyes on the road while accessing their phones via Siri.  Some studies have already shown that hand-free phone conversations are just as distracting as hand-held phone conversations.

It's called "Cognitive Distraction" when the driver's mind is focused on something else other that the road.  I think what we need is self-driving car before we can be entertained while in the driver's seat.
