Land Rover's “Transparent Bonnet" Will Give you X-ray Vision

Land Rover known for innovative camera technologies to raise vehicle safety to a new level, is now moving into uncharted category with its "Transparent Bonnet".

The luxury SUV maker figured out a way to incorporate a camera under the hood to help drivers better see what’s happening right in front of them.

Using camera images projected onto a full width heads up display at the bottom of the windshield, this technology provides visibility of what is underneath and directly front of the car, with visualizations of otherwise hidden obstacles.

The end-result as seen in the company's promo video, is fantastic.  It really look like CG image from a Sci-fi film. Such a technology fits Land Rover's mission and company image perfectly as the company strive to build best off-road vehicles with features that can help drivers in real-world situation. This means that the driver needn’t look anywhere but straight out the front window to see the condition of the ground below the car.

“We are developing new technologies including the Transparent Bonnet to give drivers an augmented view of reality to help them tackle anything from the toughest off-road route to the tight confines of an urban car park,” said Dr. Wolfgang Epple, Director of Research and Technology for Jaguar Land Rover.

The “Transparent Hood” technology is part of a suite of new concept technologies which was showcased in the Land Rover Discovery Vision Concept car at the 2014 New York International Auto Show
