The Longest Commute in the World? 7 Hours a Day!

Thumond Alford Jr. is no ordinary man because he can endure 3.5 hrs of commute to and from his work everyday of the week.  In fact, he utilizes four modes of transportation just to get to his work in the morning which starts 4 AM - driving, slugging (type of carpool), Metro train and walking.

Alford has family in Richmond, where he was born and raised. His wife is from Chesterfield County, where her family lives. He knows all his neighbors and loves the friendly, quiet, small-town feel of the area.

Alford is inspired by his job, is proud of his two children and tenured professor wife, and says, "I have a peaceful house."

Even though he drive only a portion of his way to work,  his old car has 268,000 miles on it. A brand new 2014 replacement car has already hit 25,000 miles.

"In the morning before I even get into the WTOP zone of reception, I'm listening to classical music, or I'm listening to books on tape," he says.

"I'm going to see if I can pretty much take care of a graduate degree while I'm commuting," says Alford, who's been accepted to Radford University, for a Master of Fine Arts in Design Thinking.

For his incredible commuting story, he was awarded the winner of WTOP's Commuter Idle.  The prize is $1,000 in gas money and a limo ride to and from his work!  Congratulations.
