You Can Now Buy Auto Insurance Policy from Walmart

You can buy auto insurance through Walmart if you live in one of the eight states, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Texas.  The company said that the service will soon expand nationwide.

The service was made possible through a deal with Autoinsurance.com who carries products from major insurance companies such as Progressive, Esurance, Safeco, Travelers and 21st Century.

Daniel Eckert, senior vice president of services for Walmart U.S., says the retailer began looking into areas where it could bring its “everyday low prices” and where customers are looking to save money about two and a half years ago. The firm said its studies showed that auto insurance was one area where customers expressed frustration.

“Insurance is one of our consumers’ biggest monthly expenses and many feel they are overpaying for the insurance they have and don’t know if they are getting the best coverage and the coverage they need,” he says. “We thought we could bring something to life in both of these arenas.”

Wal-Mart said the service will save customers money. The company cited a pilot program survey it conducted last year in Pennsylvania, where customers who purchased policies from autoinsurance.com on average said they saved $1,168 a year.

"We are always looking for ways to reduce complexity, increase transparency, and give everyday low prices to Wal-Mart shoppers," said Daniel Eckert, Wal-Mart's senior vice-president of services.

Walmart will receive monthly fees for marketing the service in its stores and will also promote it on its own website, according to Eckert. Customers can access the AutoInsurance.com site through Walmart.com.

Such a deal like this always makes me wonder how would consumers save more when another middleman is added in the transaction.  You can always compare the quote by contacting the insurance company directly.
