2014 Auto Insurance Company Ranking

In a perfect world, all you need to care about is the premium and the amount of protection you want from your auto insurance company if you are careful not to get into any accident.  In reality, you are paying a hefty sum of money to protect your asset and recover from damages when the unfortunate event happens.

I'm a bit surprised to find out that the outcome of consumer satisfaction survey for auto insurance companies do change quiet a lot over the years.  The company that I have been using for many years used to in the middle of the pack, but have now dropped to the bottom of the ranking.

Well, the ranking does seem to be accurate at least in my case.  I was recently rear-ended by a careless driver.  It was a clear case of not-at-fault accident from my side, and the other driver was also cited for the violation by a state trooper.  But because the other driver was not returning the call from his insurance company to admit his fault, the process was getting delayed.

One thing I want to give a credit to the other driver's insurance company which was Nationswide is that the representative at their claims department was so polite and helpful.

I then tried to open a case with my insurance company - Travelers - in case at fault driver's insurance company drags on much longer.  To my surprise, the rep was borderline rude and kept insisting on incorrect coverage information on my policy.  I knew for a fact that I had a rental coverage but she swore that I didn't, and even went as far saying I never opted for that coverage when she looked up my policy several years back.

I ended up not opening a claim with Travelers, and someone from Travelers later apologized for giving wrong information through an Email.  But what good is the insurance policy if you cannot use it when you really needed it?

Another reason to review your insurance policy every year or so is that the premium can vary significantly from one insurer to another for exactly same coverage.  To make the matter more complicated, the premium charged by each insurer can fluctuate independent from one another.  It's kind of watching the mortgage rate offered by various banks.
