2015 Cars and Truck with IIHS Top Safety Awards

Here is another good reason to buy a new car over an used car - better safety.  Cars and trucks are getting safer by the year, well, for the most part.  39 out of 71 2015 model year cars were awarded top safety pick rating by IIHS.

It's even more impressive since IIHS has recently updated their test and standard to be much tougher.  And kudos to Subaru for standing out from the crowds.  A spokesman for the IIHS adds that Subaru "is the only manufacturer to receive TSP awards for all models six years in a row."

IIHS has been awarding TOP SAFETY PICK to vehicles that perform well in its tests since the 2006 model year and has tightened criteria twice before this year. TOP SAFETY PICK+ was introduced last year to reward automakers that achieved good or acceptable performance in the just-introduced small overlap test, in which 25 percent of a vehicle's front end on the driver's side strikes a rigid barrier at 40 mph.

A breakdown of automakers with the most awards:

Toyota (including Lexus and Scion): 12 vehicles
Honda (including Acura): 10
Subaru: 7
Nissan: 6
GM: 5
VW: 5
Ford: 4
Volvo: 4
