Holiday Travel to Hit Record this Year Due to Low Gas Price

Can you believe that the average gas per gallon has come down to $2.50 today?  That's the lowest it has been in 5 years, and travelers are planning to take a full advantage of that during upcoming holiday season.

According to AAA's projection, almost 99 million Americans will be traveling more than 50 miles by car or air.  That's the highest number since AAA started tallying the number since 2001.

“Cheaper gas and a slowly improving economy are helping to drive expected travel volumes to the highest level we have ever seen for the year-end holidays,” AAA New York media relations manager Robert Sinclair Jr. said. “Gas savings are expected to amount to $92 billion, or $750 per household for the four quarters beginning October 2014, ending September 2015.”

About 90% of the travelers are planning a road trip instead of hopping on an airplane.  The calendar this year is also contributing to the perfect setup. Both Christmas and New Year's Day falls on a Thursday, making it easier to make an extended long-weekends.

AAA also predicts that the pump price will drop down even further - about 10 to 20 cents by Christmas Day.
