Goodyear's Futuristic Tires Can Charge Electricity

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. unveiled a concept tire at the 2015 Geneva International Motor Show this week that can charge electricity.

Codenamed "BHO3,", it uses the heat generated from the friction caused between tires and a road surface to generate power. The company states it could significantly improve the distance an electric car can travel before it needs another charge.

'This tire generates electricity through the action of materials in the tire that capture and transform the energy created by heat when it flexes as it rolls during normal driving conditions,' Goodyear said in a statement.

The one of the most important factor for electric vehicles of today is the driving range.  Any technology that can help extending the range in a practical way will have a direct impact on EV's future sales.

Joe Zekoski, Goodyear's senior vice president and chief technical officer commented, "We envision a future in which our products become more integrated with the vehicle and the consumer, more environmentally friendly and more versatile."

There is no further details on the availability and pricing of these high tech tires yet. We will have to wait and see if these tires will remain as a concept or actually make to the production line.
